It’s Spreading

The first time I saw the “slogan” it was on a poster in Mitt Romney’s hands.  When asked about it, he refused to take responsibility.

The second time I saw it, Lindsey Graham was holding it.  Graham had an excuse and apologized, stating that he “should have been more careful.”

The third time was this morning on Bill Bennett’s show.  A caller put it in the form of a joke.  Phil, the caller, asked Bill if he had heard what Chelsea had asked a captain in the Army in Iraq.  I imagined at that moment that Bill thought he was getting a scoop.  Phil went on, “Chelsea asked the captain what he was afraid of.  The captain replied, Obama, O_ama and your mama.”  (Remember on the poster it’s ‘moma’.)  Bennett simply replied, “Oh.  I hadn’t heard that.”  At least the cackling Seth was on vacation, or Bennett would have had some explaining to do.

It reminds me of all of the slurs that wingnuts use.  Last fall I can’t tell you how many times I heard wingnut radio talk show hosts refer to Barak Obama ________ (you fill in the blank — I’m not typing it).  After that call, the filler person on the local wingnut station, Chuck Tiller, decided he would start using Obama’s full name.

It’s not going to get better.  From all I’ve heard and read, it will only get worse.

BTW — Moyer’s is running the run up to the war in Iraq again.  I have the tape going this time at least.

  3. The “joke” about Chelsea in Iraq was circulating before the poster was used that Romney was holding, I heard it myself being repeated at a family reunion a couple of weeks earlier. And it’s “your mama,” not “you’re mama.” Also, the original joke claimed that she asked an African-American, the stereotypical implication being that that is how an Af/Am would have said it. Even though, of course, African-Americans are more likely to support Hillary or Obama that any of the other candidates.

  4. Thanks for catching my typo — I’ve corrected it now. At first I had the title “It’s Speading” and had to fix that too.

I hadn’t seen it before the Romney poster and hadn’t heard it — I listen to quite a bit of rightwing radio — until that morning on Bennett’s show.

    Thanks for commenting.
